Did you know we have a big battery coming to the Peninsula?Four members of the FZCC committee toured the site of the new 240 MW Mornington Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), situated adjacent to the Tyabb substation that serves the Peninsula, and which will be connected to the National Electricity Market. The project owners, Valent Energy, gave a very informative site tour, explained the benefits to the community and to Australia’s energy transition, and answered many questions from the FZCC committee members.
At 650 MWh of capacity, the Mornington BESS is nearly four times the size of the original South Australian Big Battery (Hornsdale), and will store surplus power from the grid at times of high renewables generation to deliver it back to the grid at peak hours of demand in the early evening (4–9pm) and early morning (6–9am). When called upon, the giant battery can deliver up to 240 MW of power for nearly 3 hours, enough to power over 40,000 homes! It can also help to absorb any shocks to the grid’s stability and prevent outages.
The BESS will serve the needs of the entire Peninsula, from Mornington and Hastings in the north to Portsea and Flinders in the south. Once operational in Q2 2026, it will be one of the largest batteries in Australia.
